Subject: Spirit Day Changes

    Dear students,

    Spirit Days have long been a school tradition. However, we will be reducing the number of these days we have each year. The changes will go into effect with Fall Spirit Week. Pajama Day and Wear Your Favorite Color Day will stay. But we will no longer host Dress As Your Favorite Movie Character Day. Wacky Hat Day is canceled too.  

    Why? We have discussed the matter with many parents, teachers, and students. These special days can be fun and exciting. But they can also be distracting in the classroom. Plus, they’re stressful for families. Figuring out what to wear can take time and cost money. Not everyone can afford to make or buy costumes. As a result, students can feel left out. 

    Spirit Days can also be wasteful. At the end of the day, our cleaning staff often finds costumes piled up in garbage bins. 

    We know this decision may be disappointing to some students. But we believe that having fewer, simpler Spirit Days spread throughout the year is the right thing to do. It will help us build community in a way that is fun for all.

    As you said, Spirit Days have long been a school tradition. We understand why you have decided to cut back on them. But on behalf of the student body, I’m asking you to reconsider. 

    Spirit Days aren’t just about wearing costumes. They bring students together. Even people who don’t dress up say it’s fun to see others in their creative looks! These outfits are also great conversation starters. I always meet new people when I wear my homemade costumes. That’s extra important in the fall. Many of us are still getting to know each other. 

    We understand why you might want to stick to simple Spirit Days. But making fun costumes lets students show off their creativity. Costumes don’t have to be wasteful or cost a lot either. Last year, I made my wacky hat entirely out of recycled paper. 

    We’ve heard that students really crave ways to find joy and community at school. Spirit Days are a simple way to help with that. Can we please bring back our full Spirit Week this fall?

I always meet new people when I wear my homemade costumes. That’s extra important in the fall. Many of us are still getting to know each other.

    We see the point of sticking to simple Spirit Days. But making fun costumes lets students show off their creativity. Costumes don’t have to be wasteful or cost a lot either. Last year, I made my wacky hat out of recycled paper.
