Our lesson plans are built to follow a clear, consistent routine grounded in the Science of Reading and national and state standards. Here's how you can use them in your classroom:

• Before Reading: Engage students, activate and build relevant background knowledge, then explicitly teach essential vocabulary with the Words to Know slideshow.

• During Reading: Guide a first read focused on general understanding of the text, then an optional deeper second read for analysis and evidence collection.
  
  
• After Reading: Bring ideas together through discussion, writing, and a quick standards-aligned assessment.
  

Many teachers find that the clarity and ease of use of our lesson plans make them a reliable resource for substitute teacher plans. You can take the lesson plans and follow them as-is, or pull out and customize whatever you need to work for your classroom. (Scaffolding is built into every lesson. You’ll also find targeted supports for striving readers and multilingual learners in the “More Ways to Differentiate” section at the end of each lesson plan.)
