Parade legend
“Snoopy is special to me,” says Will. “He’s the longest-running parade balloon!”

Every November, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade takes over New York City for a day. Nearly 3 miles of busy city streets are shut down to traffic. About 3.5 million people line the route. Thousands of performers sing and dance in the streets. Massive balloons—some more than 70 feet long—soar overhead.

It’s one of America’s most-watched entertainment programs on television. But how does an event this big come together? We asked Will Coss, the parade’s executive producer.

Can you explain what you do?

It’s my job to oversee everything behind the scenes for the parade. This can mean deciding what balloons to include or how floats are designed. I also help make sure everything and everyone is ready for the big day, rain or shine.

Did you always want this job?

I’ve always been creative. But this job wasn’t always one I thought I could do. I didn’t know anyone where I grew up who worked in entertainment and TV. But my family and teachers were always supportive. My mom would say, “Anything is possible.”

How early do you start preparing for the parade?

We’re planning for it every day of the year! But it’s busiest from the summer into the fall. There’s a lot to do, from designing about 4,000 costumes to making dozens of floats.

Can you describe how the balloons and floats are made?

Our production team is made up of about 30 to 40 people. This includes sculptors, welders, engineers, and painters. Each balloon design starts with a sketch. Then fabric is cut, melted together, and painted by hand. Last year, we used about 2,000 gallons of paint!

What happens next?

Our balloons are folded. Floats are broken down. We put everything into big trucks. On Thanksgiving eve, we drive them from our studio in New Jersey to New York City. Then we rebuild the floats and reinflate the balloons.

What do you love most about your job?

I grew up watching this parade. I was blown away by the magic and the excitement. It’s amazing that I get to be on the other side of things now. I love delivering that same joy I felt to others, both young and old. •
