What to do: On a separate sheet of paper, fill in each blank below with a word that uses one of these prefixes. We’ve done the first one for you.

On a sunny day, people gather around a large dolphin pool. They watch as a graceful (full of grace) dolphin glides through the water. Soon the dolphin rises to the surface and lets people pat its head.

For years, people have enjoyed dolphin shows at marine parks around the world. But this show is different. Its star is not a real dolphin. It’s a robot created by a company called Edge Innovations.

Intelligent Creatures

Scientists say dolphins are among the most intelligent creatures on Earth. They can recognize themselves in a mirror and use tools to catch their prey. They seem to have a strong ability to remember, solve problems, and communicate. And they seem to feel ____________ (full of power) emotions.

Dolphins have always fascinated us. In some cultures, seeing a dolphin is a sign of good luck. But for most of human history, unless you were a sailor or a fisherman, it was rare to see a dolphin up close.

Then, in the late 1800s, people started catching dolphins in the wild and selling them to aquariums in Europe and the United States. Visitors loved watching the animals swim and play. Soon dolphins were being trained to do tricks.

Dolphin Debate

At the time, keeping dolphins in captivity seemed ____________ (without harm). Not much was known about how life in captivity affects dolphins. The shape of their mouth makes them appear to be smiling, so people thought the dolphins seemed ____________ (full of good cheer).

Today we know that life in captivity is ____________ (having the quality of stress) for dolphins. They can travel many miles a day in the wild, so swimming in ____________ (without end) circles around a pool is likely boring for them.

For these reasons, Canada and other countries have passed laws against keeping dolphins in captivity. In the U.S., marine parks have become less popular.

But owners of marine parks say their dolphin shows don’t just entertain visitors. They also teach people about ocean life.

Thanks to robot dolphins, park visitors can still enjoy a show. And real dolphins can give up their ____________ (without joy) lives in captivity. Imagine how ____________ (full of thanks) the real dolphins will be to get back to nature!

As for the two bottlenose dolphins pictured on the opposite page? The robot is the one on the left.
