I have never played so badly, I thought as I missed yet another shot

I was 10 years old, playing in a basketball tournament. It felt like every time I tried to pass the ball, it ended up with the other team

With every mistake, I felt worse. Frustration built up inside me, making it hard to focus. Mistakes led to even more mistakes

When the game ended, I had a meltdown. I was so embarrassed. I never wanted to play basketball again.

That’s when I knew I had to make a change.

Attitude Shift

If I wanted to get better at basketballand enjoy it againI needed a better attitude. So I found an app for athletes that had lessons on building a positive mindset. I collected inspiring posts on social media. I read advice from athletes I admired, like LeBron James and Floyd Mayweather.

I learned a lot: Every failure is a lesson. Getting better at something takes practice. Be patient with yourself. Hard work makes anything possible

As I gathered these lessons, I had an idea: What if I took the positive messages I learned and put them on T-shirts? I named my brand The Top because that’s what I wanted to inspire people to reach for. I got to work right away.

Getting Help

Ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to be an entrepreneur. My family is full of them! My great-grandmother owned a hair salon. My grandfather owned a few restaurants and gas stations. My dad has his own business selling houses. I’ve always been inspired by how they made money working for themselves.

But I was so excited about The Top that I rushed everything. I came up with a quick design and had shirts printed from a cheap website. They did not turn out great. Honestly, my first attempt was a failure. I definitely needed some help

Then I heard about the Industry Club at the Boys & Girls Club. It’s a program where kids can learn about careers. One option is fashion.

I didn’t really think of myself as a fashion designer. But I really wanted my brand to succeed. I was excited to learn more about how to run my business.

New Skills

In the Industry Club, I got some great advice for how to improve The Top. I learned how important it is to have a clear vision of your brand before you launch it.

I also got an education in the world of fashion. I learned how to sew and pick out fabrics. I figured out what design aesthetics I liked most. I picked up a lot just watching the people around meboth the adults and the other kids

Then I got chosen for the Black Men in Fashion program. Five of us were paired with mentors from the fashion industry

Together with our mentors, we would design a few outfits. Those outfits would go to New York Fashion Weekand so would we!

To the Top

Langston designed the suit this model is wearing! It was featured at New York Fashion Week.

The trip to New York City was life-changing. Being surrounded by so many other powerful, creative Black men was a feeling I’ll never forget. I felt like anything was possible for me.

Then I saw the two suits my mentor and I designed on the runway. I couldn’t stop staring! That’s when I started thinking of myself not just as an entrepreneur but also as a fashion designer

Today, The Top is going strong. My T-shirts have gotten a lot of attention. But I want to do more. I want to launch more brands. I want to work with other designers. I want to see more of my creations on runways

The biggest thing I’ve learned is that you can reach the top over and over again. When you reach one goal, it gives you strength to reach the next one

Maybe that lesson will be on my next shirt
