The World’s Biggest Food Fight
Everything you need to know about La Tomatina, a very messy celebration
Shutterstock.com
What is it?
At La Tomatina, people throw tomatoes at each other! Some people believe it started in 1945 after a small argument—and grew from there.
Where in the World:
La Tomatina is a festival that takes place in Buñol, Spain, each August.
Jim McMahon/Mapman ®
The Numbers:
20,000 people
That’s how many visitors take to the town’s streets for the one-day festival.
60 minutes
That’s how long the actual tomato fight lasts. (But there’s also food, music, and a parade!)
265,000 pounds
That’s about the amount of tomatoes used in the food fight.

If You Visit:
DO
Squash tomatoes before throwing them. This helps prevent injuries.
DON’T
Throw anything that’s not a tomato. (It’s against the rules!)
Up For Debate?
Some people say La Tomatina isn’t a fun event—it’s a waste of food. Others argue it’s OK. They say the tomatoes used are too ripe or bruised to eat anyway.
Your Turn: Do you agree with people who say that La Tomatina is wasteful? Write a short paragraph stating and supporting your opinion.
