Bye-Bye, Big Cups
New York’s mayor, Michael Bloomberg, believes the new law will help people get healthier. According to the Centers for Disease Control, people consume more when given larger portions. Eating or drinking too much sugar can lead to major health problems, like diabetes. Those health problems are painful for patients. They are also expensive.
But soda companies are fighting the new law. They say that small businesses will earn less money if they can sell only small sodas. And people who once saved money by sharing a large soda will no longer have that choice.
Should it be against the law to sell supersize sugary drinks?
